Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
